Over the Slump

Minnesota Wild fans, management, and players alike dreaded this part of the season the past few years as they always seemed to sit in a slump. But 2016 has finally seen a new trend: winning. The Wild won their 7th straight game against Arizona on Saturday afternoon. Let’s dive into what finally got the Wild over the hump (slump).

What I Like About Bruce...

When pro sports teams re-tool their coaching staffs, a shift in philosophy is usually at the core of the change. That was certainly the case this summer when Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher decided to hire Bruce Boudreau as the fifth head coach in franchise history. More than one-third of the way through the season, that move is looking pretty shrewd right now.

Winning makes everything better

Originally, I thought about writing a piece about high school hockey. But when the Wild win five in a row, I suppose I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t write about these suddenly red-hot men in green and red. The Minnesota Wild are 16-8-4 overall, that includes three one-goal victories in the latest winning streak, an overtime win in Edmonton and a shootout (that probably went too many rounds) against Edmonton in St. Paul.

The What Ifs: What if Doug Risebrough Did Everything Right?

Imagine if you could fall asleep tonight and wake up in 1999, and somehow got a job as Doug Risebrough’s right hand man (or woman). Say, with your foreknowledge, that you could tell Dougie which players would be great, and which would fizzle out? Let’s head on down to the Beatrix Loman Memorial Meditation Zone and ponder what might have been.

A Sluggish Division

Through the first two months of the regular season, the Wild haven't exactly given a strong reason for hope when it comes to having a different finish for the postseason. Whether its giving a full 60 minute effort or giving goal support to their Vezina Trophy worthy goalie, the team has left much to be desired. But one reason for hope, is the fact the rest of the Central Division has struggled just as much as the Wild have.
