Minnesota Wild Minor League Update: 2/17/16

Minnesota was making big news in the past week, but the firing of Mike Yeo certainly had a ripple effect on the organization, as Iowa coach John Torchetti was promoted to take his place. Find out who is now replacing Torchetti in Iowa, scores, news, and more in this week's minor league update!

Friday February 12
at Iowa 4, Grand Rapids 2

It was Iowa's third annual 'Pink in the Rink' night, as the team wore special pink jerseys which were auctioned off later in the night. As for the game, Iowa fell behind in the first period as Grand Rapids struck on a shorthanded goal, but the Wild were able to strike twice before intermission, then twice again in the second period. The Griffins gave it their best in the third to get things close, but Steve Michalek stood tall making 16 saves to secure the 4-2 win.

Saturday February 13
Grand Rapids 4, at Iowa 3

This time it was Iowa who scored first, but were unable to hang on for the victory. The lone goal in the third period was scored by Grand Rapids' Joel Chouinard, as he broke a 3-3 tie with 2:59 remaining in the hockey game. Iowa was unable to score the equalizer, and the fell 4-3 in what turned out to be John Torchetti's final game as head coach of the Iowa Wild.

Sunday February 14
at Milwaukee 2, Iowa 0

It was a tight defensive battle on Sunday night, as both teams had trouble just getting shots to the net. Kevin Fiala broke the scoreless tie 12:40 into the second period, as he beat goaltender Leland Irving. Irving was able to make some big saves for Iowa (21 saves on 22 shots), but Fiala's goal turned out to be the game winner, as Max Reinhart added an empty netter to seal the victory.

-David Cunniff was named interim head coach on February 13.
-G Steve Michalek is making his mark in Iowa, writes Tom Witosky.
-10,097 fans were in attendance for 'Pink in the Rink' night, on Friday. Proceeds from the auctioned off jerseys went to the Susan G. Comen Foundation.

Friday February 12
at Tulsa 3, Quad City 2

Tulsa came out and found themselves with a 3-0 lead halfway through the game, as Quad City had done little to answer up until that point. Goals late in the second from Matt Carey and Kevin Henderson cut the lead to one, but the Mallards were unable to tie it up in the third and they lost 3-2.

Saturday February 13
Quad City 4, at Tulsa 3 (OT)

It was another multi-goal lead for Tulsa, as they were up 2-0 after the second period thanks to a pair of power play goals. A pair of Matt Carey goals and a Raphael Bussieres goal put Quad City in the lead late in the third, but with 54 seconds left the allowed the tying goal to send it to overtime. 2:41 into the extra session, Bussieres scored his second goal of the game to get the Mallards the win.

Tuesday February 16
Quad City 2, at Wichita 1 (SO)

Both teams exchanged goals in the first period, but both goalies did not allow a goal for the rest of the game despite the high shot count in the game (shots finished 43-34 for Quad City). Four rounds of a shootout was required to decide a winner in this one, as Kyle Follmer scored the winning goal for Quad City. Brody Hoffman stopped 33 shots for the Mallards.

News and Notes

-Kevin Henderson signed with SaiPa in the Finnish league Liiga and has been placed on the Quad City suspended list.
