Minnesota Wild Minor League Update: 2/10/16

It was a rather eventful couple of weeks for the minor league teams, as some exciting games and roster activity took place. Find out how the teams did, and who is on the move, in this week's minor league update.

Friday January 29
at Iowa 5, Charlotte 4 (OT)

Charlotte got out to a 3-1 lead early in the second period, but goals by Zack Mitchell and Christoph Bertschy (his second of the game) were able to knot the score at three heading into intermission. The Checkers scored the go ahead goal with 87 seconds left in the game, but Christoph Bertschy scored his third of the night 36 seconds later to send the game to overtime. Grayson Downing scored the winner 2:13 into the extra session to give the Wild the win.

(Note: Christoph Bertschy's hat trick was the first hat trick in Iowa Wild history)

Saturday January 30
at Iowa 5, Charlotte 1

John Torchetti bobblehead night was a big success, as Iowa earned their second consecutive win in a five goal effort. Steve Michalek (recently recalled from Quad City) made his AHL debut, and it was a memorable one. Michalek stopped 32 shots in the win, and found himself taking on Checkers goalie Daniel Altshuller in a fight halfway through the second period (see below video). Zack Mitchell had two goals and an assist to lead Iowa in this game.




Friday February 5
Chicago 2, at Iowa 1

Brett Sutter got Iowa on the board in the second period to give them a 1-0 lead, as the team was trying to get their third consecutive win. However, they were shutdown the rest of the way as Chicago goaltender Jordan Binnington made 39 saves in the game, 28 of which came in the second and third period combined. Danny Kristo and Eriah Hayes scored in the third period to give the Wolves the 2-1 victory.



Saturday February 6
Iowa 5, at Chicago 1

Four (!!!) goals in the first period put Iowa in the driver's seat, as they took a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. Steve Michalek, making his second AHL start (and had no fights in this one), was sensational once again, making 36 saves against the Wolves. Iowa cruised to a 5-1 win with 12 different players making their way onto the scoresheet.



News and Notes

-D Christian Folin was recalled by Minnesota on February 1
-D Gustav Olofsson was on the Central Division team in the AHL All-Star Classic on February 1. The Central Division team won the tournament after defeating the Pacific Division and the North Division.
-F Jared Knight was recalled by Iowa from Quad City on February 6.
-F Tyler Graovac was recalled by Minnesota on February 6. He was reassigned back to Iowa on February 8.
-D Mike Reilly was recalled by Minnesota on February 8.
-G Jeremy Smith was reassigned by the Boston Bruins to Providence of the AHL. In 23 appearances with Iowa, Smith was 5-14-3 with a 2.94 GAA and .912 save percentage.

Quad City Mallards (ECHL)

Friday January 29
at Kalamazoo 6, Quad City 5

Quad City was able to get out to a 2-0 lead early in the second, but six consecutive goals from Kalamazoo (including five in the second period to chase Brody Hoffman) sunk the Mallards. The Mallards were able to get three in the third to trim the lead down to one, but they were unable to score the equalizer.

Saturday January 30
at Cincinnati 3, Quad City 2 (OT)

With just five shots in the first period, Quad City was able to get out to a 2-0 lead. However, they were outshot 27-7 in the final two periods as Cincinnati was able to tie the score. Jack Downing scored 2:16 into overtime to hand the Mallards another loss. Brody Hoffman made 39 saves in the loss for Quad City.

Sunday January 31
at Toledo 3, Quad City 2 (OT)

After giving up two goals in the first period, Quad City was able to rally for two second period goals to even the score. The game was scoreless in the third, and for the second night in a row, the Mallards were headed to overtime. AJ Jenks scored the winner 54 seconds into the overtime to hand the Mallards their sixth conescutive loss.

Wednesday February 3
at Quad City 4, Rapid City 0

After being on the losing end for six straight games, the Mallards came out with two goals in the first to set the pace in this game. They scored twice more, while not allowing a single goal to get the 4-0 win. In his final appearance with the Mallards, Steve Michalek stopped all 37 shots to earn his second shutout of the year.

Friday February 5
at Quad City 4, Rapid City 2

Once again, the Mallards got out to a 2-0 lead as a pair of Guillaume Gelinas goals had them up early in the second. Rapid City was able to cut the deficit to one on two separate occasions, but they could not get the equalizer. A Matt Carey empty net goal with four seconds left sealed the win for the Mallards.

Saturday February 6
at Fort Wayne 3, Quad City 1

After falling behind 2-0 halfway through the second (a theme in this update!), Brady Brassart was able to trim the score to 2-1 at the end of the middle frame. However, the Komets scored with 10:23 left in the third, and Quad City could not find the back of the net again.

News and Notes

-F Ryan Tesink was reassigned to the Alaska Aces by the St. Louis Blues on February 3.
-F Tanner Eberle returned to the lineup (upper body injury) on February 5 after missing the previous seven games.
-G P.J. Musico was acquired on February 9 from Greenville in exchange for future considerations. Musico was 7-3-1 with a 2.35 GAA and .925 save percentage in 13 games this season.
